What Are Curtain Bangs?

The curtain bangs trend is so popular right now—the style is fairly low maintenance, easy to grow out, and requires minimal upkeep. Curtain bangs are the ultimate blend of softness and sophistication, effortlessly framing your face with a relaxed, yet chic vibe.

Think Sabrina Carpenter’s dreamy waves paired with those swoon-worthy, flirty bangs—they’re soft, versatile, and totally iconic. Curtain bangs part naturally in the middle or off to the side, gently tapering at the edges to blend seamlessly with the rest of your hair. Curtain bangs add a flattering, face-framing touch that works for every hair type and face shape.

What to Ask Your Stylist For:

Ask for curtain bangs that are longer on the sides, gradually blending into the rest of your hair. Specify a light, wispy texture for a natural look, avoiding a heavy or blunt cut. Ask for layers that softly blend into the hair to maintain a seamless, flowing effect.

Where Curtain Bangs Should Fall on Your Face:

Short Forehead: The bangs should hit just above the brows and flow gently toward the sides to create balance.

Long Forehead: Curtain bangs should fall just below the brows, helping to shorten the appearance of the forehead.

Prominent Cheekbones: Longer curtain bangs that hit below the brow and frame the cheekbones add dimension and highlight the bone structure.

Tips and Tricks for Styling Curtain Bangs

Blow-dry your bangs with a round brush to add volume and shape. Use a light styling cream or mousse to add texture. For extra volume, slightly curl the ends of the bangs outward with a curling iron. Trim every 6–8 weeks to maintain the natural, face-framing shape.

How to Get Iconic Big, Voluminous Curls

Prepping Your Hair

Volume is key for this look, babe! You wiill want to start with products that can help with volumizing. We recommend a volumizing spray as well as a mousse. Starting with clean, damp hair, spritz a volume spray at the roots to get that lift going, then work a volumizing mousse through your ends for added fullness. This dream duo gives you major body without weighing your hair down—we're talking big hair energy.

The Blow Out For Voluminous Curls

The Bottom Half of Your Hair

A round blow-dry brush is your bestie for this look. Start by sectioning your hair from ear to ear, pinning the top out of the way—it’s easier to tackle the back first. Split the back into two sections, then work with 3-inch pieces (how many depends on your hair’s length and thickness).

Grab a boar bristle round brush and get to work! Lift each section, wrap it around the brush, and blow-dry the roots. Roll the brush while directing the dryer on top to smooth the hair. Once it’s dry, twist the brush downward as you go to create that perfect bend and shape. Once the back is done, move to the front sections.

The Top Half of Your Hair

For the top section you have two options: velcro rollers or curling with a curling iron. Which one you choose really comes down to your hair texture—and your own preference. We will go through both so you can decide which one you prefer.

Voluminous Curls Using Velcro Rollers

Use the same drying process as before, starting at the hairline and working your way back. But here’s the twist—instead of twisting the brush downward when the section is dry, wrap it around a large Velcro roller for extra volume and bounce. You’ll probably end up with three or four rollers lined up down the top of your head, giving you that Mohawk-esque setup (trust the process!). Velcro rollers are a lifesaver for adding shape and lift, especially if your hair is fine or thin.

Let it cool. Heat creates the shape, but cooling sets it in place. While your hair cools, go ahead and do your makeup, pick your outfit, or scroll TikTok. If you’re in a rush, hit the rollers with the cool shot on your blow-dryer to speed things up.

Time for the big reveal! Once everything’s cool, take out the rollers, and get ready to slay with smooth, voluminous hair that’s full of bend and body!

Voluminous Curls Using a Curling Iron

Finish drying the top half of your hair using the blow-out method with the boar hair bristle brush. After hair is dry, please, please, please don't forget to add on a little heat protectant. Our personal go-to is the Chi 44 Iron Guard.

You will want to use a larger barrel curling iron for those big, voluminous curls (1.25 inches or bigger) set to medium heat. Start the curl towards the top or center of your hair and wrap the remaining piece down the iron going away from your face. This will give you a gorgeous curl with the least amount of heat on the fragile ends of your hair.

Add Volume and Finish the Look

Give your hair a gentle shake to add some volume—no brushing or combing! That can break up the curls too much. Instead, use your hands to shape and style it exactly how you want. Finish with a light mist of texturizing spray or medium-hold hairspray to lock it in place. Keep it easy—less is more when it comes to product, so don’t go overboard. A little spritz is all you need.

How to Adapt the Process and Create Voluminus Curls for Different Hair Types

Woman with curly hair

Styling voluminous curls works for all hair types, but a few tweaks can make a big difference in achieving your perfect look.

Fine Hair

If you have fine hair, start with a root-lifting spray or mousse for added body and work in smaller sections to create defined curls that hold longer. Use a lower heat setting to avoid damage, and finish with a lightweight texturizing spray for a touch of grip without weighing your hair down.

Thick Hair

For thick hair, divide your hair into more sections to ensure even curling, and prep with a smoothing serum or leave-in conditioner to tame frizz. Thick strands can handle higher heat, so crank up your curling iron for lasting results, and don’t forget to let curls cool completely before releasing them.

Straight Hair

If your hair is naturally straight, prep with a texturizing spray or mousse to add grip, and use a smaller curling iron barrel to create tighter curls that will soften into waves throughout the day. Pinning each curl while it cools can help lock in the shape, and finishing with a strong-hold hairspray ensures your style lasts.

Wavy Hair

For those with wavy hair, enhance your natural texture with a curl-enhancing cream or gel before styling, and focus on polishing the ends with a round brush and curling iron to create uniform waves. Medium heat works best for refining your waves, and a light, flexible-hold product will keep them soft and touchable.

Pro Tip

No matter your hair type, always start with a heat protectant to safeguard your strands, and adjust your tools and products to suit your unique texture. With the right tweaks, anyone can rock voluminous, head-turning curls!
